Moving Portrait 2005
In 2005, I was a visiting scientist at MIT Media Lab, through BT's research sponsorship, and I managed the technology transfer of Orit Zuckerman's Moving Portrait into the business. In collaboration with Orit, we created a series of new installations of the Gaia portrait, working closely with the BT brand leadership team. One was built for the Connected Earth gallery at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, another was temporarily installed at the National Portrait Gallery for a corporate event, and a third was part of the permanent customer showcase at BT's London headquarters. The portrait was subsequently featured on The Gadget Show's visit to BT Labs in 2006:
In January 2007, we commissioned Orit to create the BT Spotlight for the company’s headquarters lobby, featuring interactive portraits of the senior leadership team.
At BT Labs we then began a series of explorations using attention to inform interactivity. This led to a patent for streamed video:
The Moving Portrait also inspired me to make this artistic response - Watched Pot Never Boils.
